Google's
Android and Apple's iOS systems powered 85 per cent of all smartphones shipped
in the second quarter of 2012, according to International Data Corporation, a
market research and analysis firm specialising in information technology,
telecommunications and consumer awareness.
Android took a 68.1 per cent market share of all smartphones shipped during the quarter, equal to 104.8 million phones shipped, while Research In Motion's Blackberry and Nokia's Symbian systems saw their market shares drop to 4.8 per cent and 4.4 per cent respectively. Android's success in the market was largely due to Samsung, which comprised 44 per cent of all Android smartphones shipped in the second quarter.
iOS posted double-digit growth, securing its spot as the number two operating system with a 16.9 per cent share. Blackberry reached share levels not seen since the first quarter of 2009, and Symbian saw a market share drop of 62.9 per cent, the sharpest drop year-over-year in the company's history.
Microsoft's Windows and Linux operating systems remain distant competitors to Android and iOS, with 3.5 per cent and 2.3 per cent of shipments respectively in the second quarter.
