Insurance Board (IB) -- the regulatory authority of the insurance market -- directed some insurance agencies to maintain portfolio-wise income and expenses.
"We have sent letters to the insurance agencies reminding them to maintain the portfolio wise income and expenses according to the rule as we have found -- during our inspection -- some discripencies in the income and expenses of the insurance agencies," said said Dr Phatta Bahadur KC, chairman of Insurance Board.
"The insurance agencies can not spend the income from one policy in the other policies," he said, adding that it cannot be done.
"Similarly, we have directed the insurance agancies to also follow the government's decree on third party insurance," he said, adding that the Board received complaints that some agencies denied to follow the third part insurance -- that is a must -- and forced the customers for a package deal.
Some of the insurance agencies were not selling the third party insurance as they were interested in selling their package and denying customers of third party insurance only.
Third party insurance has been made mandetory in the budget for the fiscal year 2009-10 to check the people's protest -- specially on the highways -- in case of accident. The people used to strike to pressurise for the copmpensation in case of accidents. Third party insurance has eased the situation as the victims will get compensation in such accident cases and need not protest or cal bandh -- that was the trend then.
The regulatory authority has also recieved one complaint from the customer of overcharge by the insurance agency. "After receiving complaints, we have directed the agency to pay back the premium amount that it had over charged to its client," KC added.
The regulatoty authority of the insurance market has been in recent days trying to generate awareness in the market about the benefit of the insurance that is very low in the Nepali society.
